The NEXTies are happenin' on the night of Saturday, January 23rd, 2010. We will be honoring four incredible people who are doing inspiring things here in Santa Cruz with receipt of the first NEXTie awards!

We'll be honoring:

Danny Keith, Owner, Santa Cruz Skate Shop: In addition to heading up one of Santa Cruz's oldest and most respected skate shops, Keith founded "Grind Out Hunger" with Second Harvest Foodbank, which has created a scalable curriculum in local schools that raises awareness (and funds) to fight hunger.

Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, Professor, UCSC: When not building a 6.5 meter telescope in Mexico and winning a Packard Fellowship in Engineering & Science as part of his day job being an Assistant Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at UCSC, Ruiz works as a mentor to minority students at Hartnell College and has developed the Lamat (Mayan Star) fellowship at UCSC, which offers winners an immersive introduction to the tools and research methods of astrophysics for gifted, and driven Hartnell students.

Reyna Ruiz: Director, Beach Flats Community Center: Last year, after learning that the City of Santa Cruz had cut funding for her community center, Ruiz raised more than $130,000 to keep programs up and active at the Center while inking a new operating agreement with Community Bridges and raising three kids.

Marina Sousa, Owner/Designer, Just Cake: After successful careers in visual merchandising and the entertainment industry, a twist of fate brought Marina to the doorstep of an upscale cake design studio in Beverly Hills. Ditching the laptop for an unholy waking hour, Sousa now holds a degree in Baking & Pastry Arts, appears regularly on the Food Network and runs her own design empire: Just Cake. Also, Oprah has her phone number.

The Party!

We will also be throwing down one hell of a party, featuring complimentary, scrumptious foods from top local restaurants like Soif, La Posta, Chocolate, and the BackStage Lounge. You'll also find the best in local wines, beers and cocktails from the likes of Surf City Vintners and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing (and your first drink is on the house!).

Music & Art

The night will also feature tunes by the incredibly tight live music act, Persephone's Bees, as well as art displays by UCSC's groundbreaking Digital Arts and New Media program and design by Timerie Gordon.

Don't miss out!

The NEXTies is one event in Santa Cruz not to be missed. Come join us as we transform a giant warehouse space in the former Wrigley Building at 2801 Mission into a night of recognition, celebration and jubilation! See you at The NEXTies!!!
